Did you know that koi are related to carp? That’s right – koi and carp are the same species. In fact, koi were bred from carp in Japan many years ago. This is precisely why the fish that come from Japan are some of the finest in the world. Due to excellent breeding, these fish can live up to thirty years, and they can reach up to one meter long. These fish have many different names including “living jewels” and “water pigs.” They are known as living jewels due to their brilliant colors, and they are sometimes referred to as water pigs due to their strong appetite and love of hiding deep inside of mud. Another interesting fact has to do with the fish itself. You see, these fish are not warm water fish...but they will grow a lot faster if you place them inside of a warm water pond. One thing that you should never do is add salt to your pond, since koi are not salt water fish.

Other than being piggish and shiny, these fish are also quite lovable. Many koi can be trained to eat right out of your hand, and all of them will enjoy interacting with you on a daily basis.
